Functionally relevant metabolome alterations in barley and Lotus japonicus induced by fungi infections.

The targeted breeding of stress-tolerant cultivated plants, that would allow for a reduction in harvest losses, requires new knowledge on key molecular markers associated with relevant agronomic traits, on quantitative metabolic responses of plants on fungi stress challenges, and the mechanisms underlying their biosynthesis. Therefore, a genome-wide association study on fungi-induced alterations of secondary metabolites with barley Drechsler teres resistance will be performed by means of disease-phenotyping, cutting-edge metabolomics, and activity-guided fractionation techniques. Another work branch will focus on new insights into the mycorrhiza-induced metabolic response of Lotus and will provide first clues on its role in arbuscular mycorrhiza development and function.
