Improving stress resistance through accelerated acclimation.

Plants can often rapidly acclimate to various stresses treatments, such that an exposure to a relatively mild stress early on in development can entail a higher tolerance towards more severe stress event later in life or even in the progeny. We found that in Arabidopsis thaliana, stress-induced memory across sexual propagation requires a functional DNA methylation machinery, while it is prevented by the DNA glycosylase DEMETER (DME). Here, we propose to examine the mechanism by which DME recognizes and erases stress-related patterns in the male germline, and to investigate the molecular mechanisms that regulate acclimation to xenobiotic compounds.
